Top Tunes for Christmas!
Oh, we know that the likes of Justin Bieber and Little Mix bring out their own brand of Christmas tune around this time of year, but there’s nothing quite like the classics, is there? Given that the city is modelled architecturally on Glasgow itself (true!), we always seem to have a soft spot for New York, and The Pogues’ famous ditty, Fairytale of New York, is our all-time favourite song to hit play on around this time of year. If you’re stuck in the car with the kids or find yourself driving for work a lot in the run up to the festive period, read on to see some of our other strong-contenders for the top spot.
Last Christmas: oh George, why did you have to leave us so soon? Still not quite over the passing of this legend, we’ll be sure to be cranking up Wham’s Christmas classic on the stereo this year.
I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday: well, between the expense and the military precision required for it to go off as expected, we wouldn’t quite want it every day… but maybe twice a year! Wizzard’s slice of 70’s pop is guaranteed to get the whole family dancing.
Mary’s Boy Child: If you can’t remember the words you’ll definitely remember those extravagant faux furs jackets that Boney M donned during their Top of the Pops outing when this song was released! Slow, disco vibes have listeners bopping along merrily to this upbeat track.
Step Into Christmas: Let’s face it, there’s probably not a countdown on the planet that doesn’t feature Elton John at least once. Super catchy and high tempo, Elton’s piano playing will get you up and grooving in no time.
Wonderful Christmas Time: Still party-appropriate but a little less high-energy, Sir Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmas Time is simple at its heart and guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town: All together now – “SANTA CLAUS is coming to town! SANTA CLAUS…” – and breathe! The Jackson 5’s Christmas belter is a favourite amongst little ones for the permission it seems to give them to scream “Santa Claus!” at full pelt every few minutes… ear plugs at the ready chaps and ladies!
Driving Home For Christmas: Well now, is this not the perfect track to listen to on that hallowed last day of work before the holidays?
White Christmas: And to finish, a slow, dreamy classic from the king of calming voices, Bing Crosby. Truly evoking sheets of fluffy snow, candles burning by the fireside and perfectly wrapped presents under a sparkling tree, nothing says Christmas quite like Crosby. Pass the eggnog.
